996 stering head angle?

Sooo - bought 996 through here. All good. Marvellous in fact!
Quick query though - the steering head angle is set to race, ie steeper. The givaway for this was the fact that the steering lock now cannot work. Nevermind, i've lived with it like that for about 1,000 miles, but in fitting a 190/55 rear i might have tipped it over the edge. At Anglesey recently i couldn't dial out a feeling that the front would tuck -never had this on my old bike. Similarly when riding on dodgy B-roads. just a bit too twitchy for its own good. Just rummaged in a haynes manual who are quite emphatic that this should not be switched from the road setting.
You lot have acres road & track experience -what say you? Many thanks, jamess

Personally, I never got on with the steep setting, road or track. I run 190/50 rear (6" rear) and use the rear ride height to sharpen the front up. Front forks also at stock height

From what I am told the race position head angle is best used with the longer swing arm and the rear hub set to it's highest point.

As for track, well, booked for the PB thingit on July 6th at Cadwell( yes, i know, there's a crucial one on the 9th too - maybe, if funds permit!) so i'll see how it behaves on track too. Cheers y'all!
