Digital photo - help needed

I've got a great number of digital pics on my PC that I want to transfer to a PDA. The files are JPEG and are generally around 1.7MB.

I've tried using some software that came with the camera (MGI Photosuite) to a) reduce the pic size to 640x480 pixels and/or b) reduce the "quality". Either way I end up with a much smaller file to transfer to the PDA (good) but the quality is not up to much (bad).

There are some sample pics on the PDA which have a similar pixel and file size but their quality is brilliant.

Your advice is greatly welcomed.

Thanks guys,

David

Davd, Guido put a link on the board once that was a free download.
You could reduce the sze of you pics wthout too much loss of quality. I
downloaded it once and was quite pleased wth the outcome. I lost it when my pc went belly up and have never been able to find t again.:sniff:

Paint shop pro has the ability to save JPG's with different quality levels (I'm sure there are many others).

I must admit I'm sometimes not sure which function to use best to reduce file size:

1) Quality
2) Image size
3) Colour depth

Good luck - Frank

Dave ,it sounds like you have a very big picture if you have 1.7MB in a jpeg file That would give a picture about 20"+16 if not bigger. If you are droping the size to 640 +480 about 7"+5"that trying to squeeze to many pixels together so you need to loose some ,thats why the picture looks poor. lowering the image size should help because it will reduce the amount of pixel needed. Then bring it into a more usable form. Ive U2U you with some thing that might help. 4D

Frank's right.............you can resample with Paint Shop Pro without loosing definition. E-mail me a file and I'll show you.....just let me know what resolution you want.

Bob,

It's actually on an Archos AV420 if that means anything to anyone, if it doesn't this is the gadget to beat all gadgets (now where have I heard that before?)

Seriously, it's a 20GB hard drive that holds all your music files and photos, and you just copy DVD's on to it to watch on a plane etc. You can also record from Sky and watch the Simpsons!
