Ford Galaxy Problem

I was wondering if any of you might be able to help me with a problem I had with my turbo diesel the other morning. When I stop the car engine after short runs in very cold weather there is quite a loud whiring noise coming from underneath the main cabin area. Sounds like a jet engine winding down. The car has always done this and since everything seemed to work ok I ignored it! But on Monday morning clouds of black smoke accompanied the noise. We thought the car was on fire! Looking at my Haynes manual I am pretty sure the smoke was coming from the 'Booster Heater Silencer' whatever that is?? It hasn't happened again but maybe that is because it is'nt cold enough.
Any ideas?

Galaxy's have a rear compartment booster heater, much like the Eberspacher heater in trucks. It takes a drip feed from the diesel tank and drips it onto a glow plug which in turn heats ups a heat exchanger with air being blown across it and into the cabin compartment. If you haven't used the heater settings in the rear compartment (things which younger members of the family are apt to play with and break) then the glow plug may have been gunge'd up and waiting for that day when it will be called back into use.

In other words, ramp the heat up and clean it out.

We used the rear heater on maximum during a 120 mile journey the day before and it was working ok. Didn't use it Monday morning. I assume it is only activated when the button on the dash is pushed in??
