Doh! Fudged my P4\'S

Any remedies for badly crossthreaded/stripped, caliper bolt holes ? I'm still running P4'S so we are talking alloy here, soft as bugger. The bolt has made a new home through the thread :sniff: Yeah I know:frog:

Try positioning the caliper on the fork mounts
then put some coarse grinding paste on the bolts and gently wind bolts in 2 turns out 1 and so on!

if not drill and elly coil them ! ....mav

It's brakes, don't pxxs about. Like Mav says, do it properly with Heli coils. If no one near you has a some, it'll cost abot £35 for the whole kit.

Not something to take a chance on I believe.

Rethread and go to the next size up or maybe lock-wire in place as a short term measure?

If you go the Helicoil route, remember the thread is a metric fine pitch, 1.25mm not the regular 1.5mm. Helicoils are/will be available but make sure you get the right one or make sure whoever does the job knows to.

If you are anywhere near me in sussex, and can't get anyone to helicoil, I will happily help out, as I get the kits from a local supplier, and have heli'd a number of things on my race bikes ;)
A helicoil is a proper job - drilling and fitting the next bolt size up isnt !

keefer 31-Dec-2004 16:04

if its just gone wrong at the beginning of the thread you could try putting the bolt back through the opposite side to re hone it. worked once for me.
but only if its at the beginning and there is plenty of meat left behind it

WeeJohnyB 31-Dec-2004 16:32

er....get a longer bolt and thread it through and put a washer and two nuts on the other end.....er....works for CB5 racing:lol:

"works for CB5 racing"-as does a long length of scaffold tube and a 4lb hammer I seem to recall...........

In case anyone is wondering, JohnnyB is not allowed anywhere NEAR the TZ if he has any tools with him.........!

Is the caliper threaded then or is it just the fork or both?
