Which? battery

Help! - My alarm had flattened the original battery on my '01 996s, so I decided to replace it with a new one. I was a bit confused as the bike manual says 12v-10ah, but my Haynes manual says 12v-16ah..I settled for a Yuasa 12v-10ah from Halfords, charged it up, but the bugger is wider than the original battery & won't fit!
Thanks for any advice, Illya.

Get yourself an Optimate as well!

Mine's 5 years old and still on the original battery ... and it has an alarm!

Not much help if you don't keep your bike near a leccy socket though...

Not a YTX9 as its to wide(deep) they fit my CBR600 and Fireblade fine but do not fit my 916 or my 998
My 916 has a normal lead Acid battery which is the 16Ah one, the 998 uses a sealed Battery can not remember the number of it and my local bike shop doesn't stock it as I found out a week ago.
So in the mean time I have fitted my R6 battery to the 998 which is the perfect size. On later 996s I think they also use this size sealed battery by fitting an adapter to the original 916 battery box.
If nobody does it before I get home I'll post the sealed battery ID number later

Battery is YT12-B4 according to http://www.motorbikebatteries.co.uk/

Shazaam! 13-Jan-2005 16:28

In 2001, the bikes were fited with a revised starter motor gear ratio that drew less current and made it possible to start the bike using a smaller battery. The starter gearing on the early bikes are not well suited to the smaller batteries.

Standard battery 1994 - 2000 model years:

Yuasa YB16AL-A2 (16 AH, 200 CCA, 11.5 lbs.)

Standard battery 2001 - 200X model years:

Yuasa YT12B-BS (10 AH, 125 CCA, 7.6 lbs.)

damn - mines a 2001 model and guess what? battery not quite up to the job this morning.....so which battery-guess if i look at it there are some serial numbers to identify it - goes on the optimate every 2-3 weeks at the moment. Probably combination of short trips, cold weather, lights on etc

ils 14-Jan-2005 21:15

Thanks guys - optimate not an option as the bike's kept outside & too far from a power point..The usual answer is to give the old girl a good run every 4 days. If I leave it any longer than this the datatool has drained the battery & there ain't enough charge to start her. Trouble at this time of year is finding a suitable 'window' - weatherwise.
I now have a brand new, fully charged battery which is useless to me. Ho Hum.

Hi ils,

Sorry to come in a bit late but I had this same dilemma and decided to go for a battery that was overspecc'd for my 996 to handle the shorter runs etc,l ie, less charging time and more starting. I went for the Odyssey PC680 (off the top of my head) it has around twice the cranking amps of the standard battery although is slightly heavier and slightly larger and I had to bodge up the mounting to get it in, all worth it though.

I agree. I installed a Odyssey PC680MJ in my 916 in May 2001and it's tlll going strong. Highly recommended.

Am I weird because I have this warm tingly sensation after the almighty Shazaam agreed with something I said? :borg:
