Race cans - do I need to change the chip?

Hi all,

I have lasted about 2 weeks with standard cans on my 748 and I think it is time to unleash the noise!

Question is, do I need to get an upgrade chip for the ECU if I get some race cans (Termigs etc.)? I am not bothered about buying brand new (the bike is second hand after all) and quite a few sets are on flebay but some are without the chip. Unless of course someone here has a set for sale?

Will the bike run OK without? And while I think about it, what sort of differences are there between 45 and 50mm (apart from the size obviously)?

Thanks in advance guys

Hog

Hi mate in short yes. Youre flowing more air, so it'l need more fuel.
If you tell someone like jhp what your bike is and the uprated cans etc, i bet he'll have a near as dam it programmed chip.
Ultimately, you would need a dyno run to prove it exactly right.

Yep - you'll be able to get a 45mm open pipe chip or a 50mm open pipe chip from JHP. Or you can go the Ultimap route and get a programmabel chip set up exactly for your bike.

The first option costs around the £40 mark and the second about £100 more.

If its just noise and a bit more perfomance you're after, you'll be fine with the non-programable one.

The least you should do is fit basic open chip as you don't want it to run to lean.
programable chip is good or powercomander(more expensive) but both need time on the dyno for ultimate set up.

Depends mate basic dyno runs go for between £35-45 then usualy per hour labour rate there after.

There is a place down here in devon that are a recomened power comander center they sell power comander with dyno set up time tho not sure on price (not had mine done yet)

Rattler
Just for your info an Ultimap set up for a 998 was recently quoted to me at £500+ .......................expensive!

picked up a powercommander £180 + £60 for the man himself to set it correct.........and aint that a piece of mind when john says its running sweet, and hes really pleased with the size and shape of the torque curve! ooh er.

Incidentaly, with the race cpu fitted, a stage some of us would deem to be ok.......It was running very lean at high revs, in fact on a big long hot straight, piston melting lean.

Didn’t I read some where that dynoing a Ducati damages the crankcases or have I dreamt that one?

Hog be careful not all the pipes on ebay that claim to be Termi’s are, and it’s very difficult to tell from a photo. Also I’ve been told that Termi the company also sell 2nds. In the end I brought mine through the site.
