Tank and fuel pump layout
 

Some more help please :D

How are the tank and fuel pump arranged? Is the pump inside the tank, and do they come off together? Is it a difficult job to remove them?

The fuel pump is bolted to the underside of the tank, similar to a 748/916, so if you remove the tank the pump come with it. you will need to disconnect the fuel pipes

Cheers skidlids. Is there anywhere online I can find simple guides for removal/installation of basic parts (that aren't in the owner's manual) for the 749/999 series?

I'd love a Haynes manual, but I've heard they don't have plans to do one anytime soon...

Skidlids...can you just give me a quick overview of what nuts/bolts I need to remove to get the tank off, and if any other parts need removing first?

khu,its a doddle to take the tank off.Start by removing the two bolts under the seat.(If its a mono,the ones to adjust the seat back and forth.)There are another two bolts under the seat pad.If its a mono,there is a peg that locates in a rubber bush in the rear subframe.Just pull the rear portion of the seat unit up to release it.(It may be tight!)If the bike is a bip,there is a couple of bolts under the passenger pad.
You can now lift the seat unit and tank up enough to reach the centre bolt.I use a bit of 2"x2" to prop up the tank while I'm undoing the 17mm bolt that connects the seat to the tank.With the seat out of the way you can disconnect the pump electrics and the fuel lines.Some bikes have a snap off union and some just a simple hose clip.Either way you can remove them without fear of fuel pouring out.Now gently lift the tank and pull it backwards.You will see the breather pipes under the cover near the ignition switch.Pull them off and the tank can be lifted clear of the bike.
Sounds a bit complecated,but with practice,its a doddle.:)

good job you explained it KeeefyB as I don't own a 749 or 999 so Haven't done it other thanhelping Chippy do his once.
i just have a few bitd for sale, like the tank complete with pump, full 749S fairing and a pair of mirror indiactors, just trying to sort out what to ask for them
