Techie question.... Win2k

How do you remove NTBackup from a Win2K server?

If you delete ntbackup.exe, leave it for say 10 seconds it recreates the .exe file, it doesn't appear in add/remove programs\windows components etc...:puzzled:

Why do you want to remove it?

It's the built-in MS backup and recovery tool and gets recreated in case you "accidentally" delete it because it's so important to the functionality of windows...

yawn

Windows File Protection will be putting it back.

I have to ask though, why do you want to remove it? I've never had any compatibility issues with other backup products. Also, back in NT 4.0 and 5.5 days it was the most reliable backup solution.

Hang on Tony ... isn't this the bit where I rant at you for posting the same information as me, then go off in a huff about it?

I suppose I could have added that you can turn WFP off, and delete to your hearts content. If you are that way inclined.

Not sure why you'd want to get rid of it though. It doesn't provide any tuning benefits so I can only think of compatility issues. I've done a quick search in technet online and haven't turned up anything. ...

Hrmm .. Jon?

The reason behind it is all of our Win2K boxes randomly don't backup and you either have to delete the media library, or reboot the server to actually detect the tape drives, whereas several of the same servers were originally NT4 and never failed.

Seems to be a common issue and several people have suggested you can roll back to NT4 Backup on a Win2k box, you need to replace various DLL's etc and few bits here and there, so I have been tasked to see if this solution could work, but obviously hit this snag

Are there any entries in the Event Log showing errors?

I'm unclear as to why you'd want to remove it too? If you're having issues with a 3rd party backup app then in my experience it's unlikely that the error is coming from NTBackup and some sort of conflict. If you're having issues with NTBackup however I suspect that managing to uninstall it altogether would pose a bigger problem!! :)

There can be issues with drivers being loaded that cause other backup solutions not to work correctley that being true of HP OpenView Storage Data Protector, find out from the backup vendor that you are using to find this out.

We only use NTBackup for exchange databases, but as I have said since the hardware hasn't changed, the whole media pool, RSM etc under Win2k seems to cause problems randomly, today I have had to delete 2 media pools and voila the backup works again. As this didn't exist under NT4, we had consistent backups, so we want to see if we can revert back to NT4's version of NTBackup
