749s gearing

I've got a 2003 749s & I want to lower the gearing. I usually get a 1 tooth smaller front sprocket, but it seems I can't do that as the standard one only has 14 teeth.
My only option it seems is to go bigger on the back. Has anybody done it already? Can I go 2 teeth bigger with the standard chain?

Cheers

PS. I know I need a suitable avatar - it's on the way!!

You'll need a new chain. I thought about doing this too, but never got round to it. See this thread for details:

Thanks for the link - very useful.

I've ordered a rear with 2 extra teeth. If it doesn't fit with standard chain, I'll just order one with 1 extra tooth. I'm not concerned about shortening the wheelbase as it isn't the quickest steering bike!

I'll let you know if it fits.

I've just fitted a 1 tooth larger rear sprocket (39T) to my '04 749s - std chain was o.k. but I doubt I could have got another tooth without longer chain. I'm not sure if this helps 'cos I think the '03 749s may already have a 39T whereas '04 has 38T
I haven't ridden it yet by the way.

I don't think you can go two up on the rear without buying a longer chain, I've had it done, and you need a couple more links!

It does make a fantastic change though, the bike feels much more responsive :D

To gain the same effect as 1 down at the front and 2 at the rear, I have gone 3 up at the rear.

Has the same effect with lots more drive...but i did need to get a new chain. Needed one anyway so it all worked out!!:D

Has anyone got rough costs of a new rear sprocket and chain ?
I fancy going up 3 on the rear.

Cheers, tricky

cost me about £120 at the ally pally.renthal sprocket and gold x ring DID chain

Chain length

Revdecal,

What length chain did you need (to retain standard wheelbase) when going up three teeth on the rear?

A 98 link? (up two from standard)?

Thinking of going 15/39 myself when chain needs replacing. I've run 14/36 for the last 6,000 miles and the chain is now showing signs of stretch.

R.

1 down at the front and 2 up at the rear would be more like 4 / 5 up at the rear
