engine troubles

996R, went on a ride out today, first half of the day no problems, pulled up at a closed cafe, went to start the bike again and it would only rev to two thousand then back fire, the engine wouldnt cut out but just pop. Tick over is spot on problem starts when you try to rev it.

What do you think?

Check the throttle body sensor. Don't know for sure obviously, but what you describe is exactly what happens if it's not plugged in. I missed an entire trackday once because I forgot to plug it back in. Yours might have packed it in.

Felix, when the RAC turned up today I started the bike and hey presto no problem, revved perfectly. I rode it about two miles with him following me then pop bang it happened again. i then had a long wait for the recovery vehicle. Could it still be the sensor?

Felix 27-Mar-2005 22:40

Check the electrical connections first. The sensor could be intermittent or when it gets warm. Not unheard of.

ill have a look tomorrow, just about keep my eyes open, knackered. Thanks mate.

Have you solved the problem?
It could be a small piece from the gearshift spring sticking to the magnetic pick-up? Have you cheked magnetic drain plug for items. A mate just had the same problem and it was a broken sping causing the misfiring problem. It shifted as usual.:puzzled:

Goofy, I take it you need to remove the side casing to see this?

Yes, but you could try to take oil drain to look for pieces.

Well, maybe a 1,6mm Ø piece, but the plug is not very magnetic so maybe nothing. Do you have a flexible magnet tool, you could try to stick it into the sidecase?
