What are the rules governing speed cameras?
 

I am thinking here about warning signs on roads where speed cameras are sited.
Anyone got any thoughts on this matter?
May have been caught doing 85 mph by a Trevelo just south of jkt 5 on the M25 - if that's what it's called.
The one with 2 or 3 white strips just in front of the box that photographs the front of the car.

2 sides to it..... for the enforcement to be legal, the only thing that has to be correct is obviously the calibration & type approval of the camera and the speed limit itself.... for a motorway with a standard 70 limit it's going to be.I'm afraid.
As regards signage / visibility issues, this only really comes into play if the area the camera is located in has signed up to the hypothecation scheme - this is where revenue from fines buys more cameras.
The problem is that the hypothecation rules only relate to funding and breaching them would not make the penalty for being caught on it automatically void.
I know what you'll say...that's crap / immoral / not playing with a straight bat etc. but hey ho, this is the set of rules that our wonderful Governments over the last 15 years or so have put in place.
Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but that is the current position.

could be worse you could ave been pulled over by a nice police man with a laser gun at 110 (allegedaly) on the A19 on sunday :(

I thought that these Trevelos had a digital reader and thus did not rely upon film.

Q: why then put up "Speed cameras" signs?
I am wondering if a pre-warning is, at some point within a certain radius of said box, is, actually a pre-requisite.

i think they do have to put up some signage, i was doin about 130 down a stretch and saw a tempoary sign held up on a lampost blowing about so i nailed on the brakes and bobs your uncle there was a mobile speed van up the road, if it wasnt for that temporary sign warning me of the camera theyd have got me.

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once.
Throughout the UK there is no legal requirement to advertise speed checks....
The signage is used to publicise the speed check location & to try to get drivers to slow down. It also assists in prosecutions where drivers have been warned of the speed check by a sign and then have gone on to get caught.
Don't fall into the trap of confusing the Road Traffic Act with the policies of the Safety Camera Partnerships under hypothecation which are two totally different animals
