Touring cars

Just watching it on ITV from Brands. Numerous accidents as always, just wondering why when the safety car comes out does everyone start weaving? We used to think that it helped keep heat in the tyres but i've read articles that say that it actually makes them cool down. Hard acceleration and braking are what gets them hot.

I would have thought that the hard acceleration and breaking would have worn them out too quickly:rolleye:

Tyre test say that the best way to warm tyres up is accelerating and braking. Weaving actually allows the tyre to cool down. Having said that though, the reports were in bike mags. I wonder if cars work differently?

martin brundle (itv f1) has said many times that he can never understand why the drivers weave side to side when on the out lap, or behind the safety car, apparently it does nothing to warm up the tyres.

Yeh, every single driver was doing it in the touring car racing so they must know something we dont.

I use the term racing in its loosest sense though, more like expensive dodgem cars.

I've never seen them do it in US Oval racing though and they have more incidents than most.

I am not sure I understand how that would cool the tires down. Pretty hard to keep them warm by gassing it and braking (which also eats gas, puts more strain on the engine and heats the brakes as well) due to the limited space available following the safety car. It would seem that friction between the fibers in the tire from weaving back and forth and the friction action with the course would be more effective overall to maintain some temp around the whole tire.

The mags have done tyre tests with thermocouples reading the tyre temp and proved that weaving cools them down! Why that should be i dont know.
