Anybody know anything about iTunes 4.8?

Tried to upgrade iTunes for Windows XP today from an earlier version. All I get when the downloaded installer runs is "Failed to connect to service manager. Error=0". This happens after it's already done most of the install, but the upshot is it's deinstalled my old version without installing the new. I've downloaded the upgrade twice and tried to run it direct once as well, same result. I also suspended my firewall and security stuff in case that was causing it to fail, but same result.

Apple iTunes support and chocolate fireguards are about equally effective. So I know it's a long shot but does anybody on here have any iTunes techy knowledge?

I was going to suggest the iTunes forums...

I'm guessing you have admin rights on your PC? can you not reinstall 4.7.1? There is hardly any difference between the two...

Problem with logging on as a new user it's a new user!

Jools you should have 3 .xml files under your user profile, these contactall your songs, play counts and playlists, if you go down thatroute, you'll have to re-import them or start from scratch

but will the app not install without getting conflicts then if you switch users back to your own one and start the app it'll use the correct users preference?? Oops, think I'll stick to macs, much easier :)

Do you have a remote disc drive. I had a similar problem when I tried to install a newer version of iTunes (and other S/W) with the remote drive switched off.

Then again, I may be talking complete bollo*cks.

Rgds, Rob

Hmmm, what you could do is install under a different profile, then log out and in again under your old profile, you'll have a clean install I'm guessing but you'll need to import your library from the files I mentioned earlier

Sorted.

I remembered that I had a previous iTunes version, with the associated installation program on another PC, so I copied it across and went back to the previous version.

FYI, iTunes 4.8 seems to be causing a bit of frustration on the Apple forum right now, quite a few people are having issues with it. So if you fire iTunes up and it asks you if you want to upgrade....just say NO!
