Clutch plate stack height.

My new clutch plates have arrived and now I have plenty of thicknesses to play with.

To get my stack height to 36.5mm I have the following order =

From the cranckcase outwards -

1 Steel 1.5mm
2 Friction
3 Dish - dot facing pressure plate
4 Friction
5 Steel 2mm
6 Friction
7 Steel 2mm
8 Friction
9 Steel 2mm
10 Friction
11 Steel 2mm
12 Friction
13 Steel 2mm
14 Friction
15 Dish - dot facing crankcase
16 Friction
17 Steel 1.5mm

This gives me a perfect 36.5mm according to my Vernier

Does this order sound OK before I re-assemble?

I'm thinking of the two 1.5mm at either end of the stack or should they be towards the centre with 2mm steels at either end?

Not sure about starting with a steal plate at the back of the clutch, the second hand JHP one I have just fitted to the Hybrid was like that when I got it and that steal plate looks a bit of a mess. The recommendation I got the other week for setting-up the JHP clutch included starting with a Friction plate

also recommended here http://www.yoyodyneti.com/detail.aspx?ID=903

Not sure it's applicable but the factory 999RS manual recommends (from the crankcase outwards):

Fit the set of clutch plates (18) in the following order:
- 1 sintered plate (A);
- 1 convex plate (B) (convex side facing outwards);
- 1 sintered plate (C) ;
- 1 flat plate (D) (1.5 mm thick);
- 1 sintered plate (E) ;
- 1 convex plate (F) (convex side facing inwards);
- 1 sintered plate (G) ;
- 1 flat plate (H) (1.5 mm thick);
- 1 sintered plate (I) ;
- 1 convex plate (J) (convex side facing inwards);
- 1 sintered plate (K) ;
- 1 flat plate (L) (1.5 mm thck);
- 1 sintered plate (M) ;
- 1 convex plate (N) - (convex side facing outwards) ;
- 1 sintered plate (O) ;
- 1 flat plate (P) (1.5 mm thick);
- 1 sintered plate (Q) ;
- 1 flat plate (R) (2 mm thick).

If it's a slipper then you need to use a friction first.

If not, when the clutch "ramps" the first steel can drop off the back of the drum and jam everything up big style.

Just like it did on Dallas's 748RS at Mallory, first race meeting in 2003, Morning warm up he got as far as Edwinas.

Yes, all the manuals suggest fitting a friction first but I ran this clutch for 4K miles with a steel first as recommended by Nelly and it worked fine.

Another point - the standard DP pack comes with mainly 2mm steels and only 2 X 1.5mm steels and 2 X dish plates.

I fitted mine how they were stacked in the box. I took them out of the box first of course!
