New Chain & Sprockets - Optimum Gearing?

Hi folks,

I know this subject has come up many times before, but my searches through previous posts has not really found the answer I need.

I am just about to change my chain & sprockets on a carb model 900ss, and am perplexed about what combination to go for.

Gearing at the moment is standard, but what is the optimum combination of front and rear for the road to give better acceleration and less lumpy progress through traffic:puzzled:

If I change the front from a 15 to a 14 tooth, do I leave the rear as standard or increase to say a 39 or 40 tooth?

Also, at what point would I need to increase the chain length from 96 to 98:puzzled:

All help / opinions appreciated.

Thx

I am using a standard 15T front with a 39T rear on a standard length chain, and find this gives me the best all round option

While I'm running 15/41T and just managing to get a std length chain to fit. This does not make stop/start progress any easier, as the clutch is quite heavy on mine but the accleration is fun!

I was always advised not to drop the front sprocket much as the chain will run through too tight an angle.

14/43 for me, let her rev...

Altho may go back to 40 for Cadwell as she was running hot at Donnington last time.

Andy is this with a standard 96 link chain or a 98?

Cheers
