Fully floating (CI) discs How do you know when your fully floating discs are floating toooo much?:o i.e. Mine rattle about quite a bit, is there a limit on the degree of movement in both directions (in the plane of the wheel and also across it)??? |
Side to side play is as designed.............. wear takes the form of rotational movement. My MOT tester raised this on a bike I took down one day. He was going to fail it. I asked my Brembo supplier and they suggested that there should be no rotational movement at all! |
Oh...uhm...mine have probably 2-3mm movement in both directions!!!!! When I push the bike around it rattles like a goodun':o |
Mine move a lot side to side, but almost nothing front to back. I've got a couple of sets of new bobbins but I'm not convinced they need them yet. Mine also makes hideous graunching noises when pushing it around! Doesn't seem to have any effect on the brakes through... |

I luv rattlin' !!! |
Yeh - the floaters on my FE are very noisy going in an out of the garage, but beautiful on the move. They have as good as no movement rotationally, but enough sideways movement to make me frown. I have never had a prob with them in 3 years use. Now .. the floaters on the SPS feel just the same in use - but have no sideways movement - they seem to have thicker shims beneath the circlips, and I have often wondered whether they should float MORE ! |
So what options do I have if they are 'beyond the limit'? I guess the only why they can become too slack is if either the bibbins or the holes in the disc acrrier/disc wears away a bit? Can you get different sized bobbins or summut? Don't really want to splash out £££££ on some new discs if I can help it...having said that...I have been thinking about some after hearing horror stories of CI discs going bang! |
The bobbins were pretty cheap if I remember rightly. They didn't have more than one size, so I assume it's the disc/carrier thickness that changes. I'd like some decent rationale on why they go bang before I'd think of replacing them. |
If you call £70 cheap! |
