very hot

even when out riding in cool weather the temperature on my 996R will soar close to 120. This happens if i am going through 30 40 mph zones, and obviously when i stop and she is at tick over. She returns to just above 80 when blasting along again. The fan comes on but doesnt seem to make any difference, any ideas what may cause this?

Mine does exactly the same...it gets quite worrying when sitting in traffic. Is it just because the 998 style fairing does not have enough venting for slow speeds? Only cure I have found is not to get caught in traffic! not much help I'm afraid

Dibble 21-Jul-2005 17:31

the hot weather .... the ambient air isnt cool enough so the engine warms .. no real worries .. just keep it moving ... cool sagain at 120+ :D

i noticed a big difference between the "scooped" fairing (upto 2001) and the smooth fairing (2002) on my 748E - it runs higher temp than the previous model..so i agree with ian harris

I've noticed this too. Getting into traffic is always a worry. Has anyone found the heat on their left leg almost unbearable in traffic? Or have I got a problem with my bike :o

Was talking about this last w/e with psychlist.
His 998 with the not so vented fairing had the fan wirring at every stop, wheras my 996 with lots of big 'oles in the panels didn't get over the 210f mark (100c) all day.

thinking this over again..80degrees C is normal running temp, 100 C is when fan cuts in, 120degrees C is the end of the gauge!! surely this is TOO HOT? maybe your fan is not being effective or the radiator is clogged so that when the fan comes on it is not managing the temp?? Then again you have an oil cooler - the gauge measures water temp i assume so as long as the oil doesn't get too hot maybe 120 is OK on the bigger engine.

Simply ride faster and don't slow down!!!! - sorted ;)

adam 22-Jul-2005 14:29

Tim, will the police understand, officer I had to keep to 160, its the only way to keep my bike cool.:D

smilo006 25-Jul-2005 12:31

Did the cooling fans for the 2 bikes come on at the same time?
Thought I saw a thread somewhere here suggesting that the temperature the fans come on can be adjusted.
