750SS Fuel Consumption What fuel consumption should is normal for a 95 750SS? Mine only gets about 100 miles until the light which works out at around 33 mpg. It has Ducati performance pipes, K+N and dyno jet 2 kit but this still sems poor! The cost does not worry me but the tank range is a pain. Plugs look ok. |
Sounds about right - any Ducati usually does 100 miles to a tank, higher tuned ones are worse. |
Hi Herb I would get close to 50mpg from my '94' 900ss on a run (fitted with DP pipes and K+N filter). I can get almost the same from my 888 if out on a gentle 'bimble'. 33mpg seems very low. It depends how hard you ride it I suppose. (I too usually top up the tank after 100mls - but can stretch it farther if need be) [Edited on 29-7-2005 by weeveetwin] |
I get over 35 on A and B roads and on the motorway last week going to Donington, over 45mpg doing 90ish all the way on a 2002 750 SS injection with DP cans, K&N filter + PC111 |
Cant find a std fuel consumption spec but my 900ss is around the same spec and I get 105mls before the red light shines. Yours is maybe a little on the high side. I had leakage on the carb unions - so I worked my way through and changed em all. Stopped the smell of fuel in the garage :o |
my 750SS used to do about 100ish before the light came on, had it serviced and the carbs balanced and it now gets to around 115. Ran it to 125 before filling up and managed to cram 14.5 litres in, which works out at 39mpg. Mine is standard apart from some sil motor(?) cans Nige |
39mpg on a 750!! :o I reckon you guys bikes are using too much fuel. My 900SS would do 120 - 130 miles before the light would come on. I could run it to 150 before refilling no problem and I reckon it would run to near 180 miles to empty. Normal consumption was 10 miles/litre = 45.5mpg but I'd had as much as 55mpg on a run to the West of Scotland and back and as little as 35mpg on a track day. The ST4s which has replaced it, surprisingly uses about the same amount of fuel on a day to day basis but on a recent fairly sedate (60-70) run from Glencoe to Tyndrum via Inverary managed an astonishing 63mpg.:roll: I think that most jet kits for the SS are set up on the rich side. On the SS I found that even with an open airbox and a race can it didn't need larger than the 140 main jet and that the Factory Pro needles were happy on the middle notch. That was with the float height set to the Factory Pro recommendation of 14mm. Also the carb models are prone to worn emulsion tubes and sticking choke assemblies none of which help the fuel consumption. |
Just had my light come on at 243. Usually get 15 to 20 km/l or about 37 to 47 MPG on a 93 750SS with cans, K/N, Dynojet and 14 t front sprocket. A lot of that lower mileage also comes from weaving through traffic jams on the highway. Sounds like youare getting poor mileage from something, carb settings, lower compression, etc. Do your pipes burn clean and do your spark plugs look nice and brown or is everything sooty? |
An update on this topic... Took my bike for a spin today over the hills of Weardale, and measured its fuel consumption. Topped up the tank and re-set the trip meter. Topped up again after covering 106 miles, and it took exactly 8.3 litres. This means it averaged 12.77 miles per litre (4.5 litres = approx. 1 gal?) - so it returned around. 57mpg. Allowing for the optimism of the speedo (and therefore the recorded mileage) I'd say that it was still an average of over 50mpg. It was a fairly gentle bimble, I'll admit, but I still passed 90% of the traffic on the roads. 60 mpg must surely be within reach of a 750ss? |
I get 110 to 120 a tank (before the fuel light comes on) on the run to work (70 miles, 50 of which are motorway, doing 90-100mph). So it seems pretty similar to the other guys. (1994 750SS by the way). Bike has Carbon cans, but standard carbs and airbox. Also, it vibrates like crazy - from the engine somewhere, so I'm worried it's going to blow ! |
