Strange noise??

When pulling away on my 748 there appears to be a wierd noise, hard to describe but a kind of groan and seems to be coming from rear hub but not sure, its not particularly loud and you almost seem to feel it.....any ideas

It's the clutch.

The Duke clutch is a dry clutch and it gets a bit of dust between the plates every now and then, especially if you've got a standard clutch cover. Causes a graunching noise as you pull away

Nothing to worry about, just take off the cover and blow the dust out.

Having an open clutch cover takes care of it

cheers jools, the bikes got an open cover on it but i'll check it out later

I was thinking about changing to a open clutch cover but would that make a bigger racket than the standard cover.

pop your earplugs in and think how much better it looks:lol:

Might be worth having a look at the rear chain to see if you have a tight spot, put it up on the paddock stand and rotate the back wheel. check the full lenght of the chain . 4D

Sell it and buy a Honda!:D

Right, had the clutch apart last night, cleaned everything out but now have 2 questions, whats the torque setting for the bolts that hold the springs and colletts and does it matter if the centre of the basket moves as it and the presure plate have marks(timing?) on them

Your supposed to line all the marks up but i have'nt found that it makes much difference. Do the spring bolts up with a small allen key, don't heave on them or your next post will be "help me get a broken bolt out of my clutch". A bit of coppa slip wouldnt hurt.

One of the spring posts has a slot on the top of it. You have to make sure that post goes through the hole in the pressure plate with the corresponding mark. Apart from that, anything goes.

Spring cap retaining bolts are torqued to about 5 or 6 Nm, not worth torquing really, just snug them down by hand using copper slip grease or molybdenum disulphide grease on the threads.
