Roar, cough...die :(

Afternoon peeps,

Currently rebuilding my 748s after a crash which left my baby without a front end (to speak of). Its virtually back together now, although im still too broken to ride it :(

Anyhows, like I say, its almost back together, the only major parts missing atm are the air tubes on both sides, if i try to start her up, i turn the key, fuel pump etc starts up as normal, hit the ignition switch, it tries to start, give it a few revs and it starts up, a few seconds later it just coughs and dies, is this likely to be due to the missing air tubes ? Im kinda hoping so, but any ideas?

Craig

in short no.
having no air tubes will not affect it
im afraid you have something else a miss.
does it have enough fuel in it ?

Craig G 31-Aug-2005 16:45

Yea, almost a full tank of gas :/

Kinda at a loss at what it could be if its not related to that :(

JPM 31-Aug-2005 16:46

Are you sure fuels getting into the engine though? blocked filter maybe?

Craig G 31-Aug-2005 16:56

Well, its difficult for me to work on only having one good arm at the moment, would it start at all and run for a few seconds if there was no fuel getting to the engine? I don't know, maybe the impact of the crash has done something more serious than it appeared :/

What can i do to check? I'm no mechanic, just trying to learn what i can along the way :(

Sounds like fuel starvation, is the fuel "old"?

I understand that modern fuel goes of and forms a solid varnish in the injectors if left for any period of time.

Get well soon

I've seen cars do a similar thing when the filter has been duff, as it starts to pump fuel the crud in the tank moves and blocks the filter, then when it settles the crap moves allowing fuel to pass again.

Craig G 31-Aug-2005 17:07

Fuel is about 4 weeks old, its not leaking fuel, so nothing can have come loose, right? more than likely a blockage of sorts?

Damn things costing me a small fortune :P

When you try and start it do you give it any throttle? Fast idle button? My guess would be that one of the FI sensors in the nose of the bike has been damaged and is messing up the ECU.

Blocked filler cap breather?
