748 frame spec (will a testastreta eng fit) i am considering a winter project of putting a 998s engine into my track bike which is a 748 frame. taking a quick look at my 996r there seems to be some differance in the cross bracing where the throtttle boddies go, does any one know if it will fit straight in or what mods may be necessary if it will fit at all [Edited on 3-9-2005 by Bungi] |
The 998 uses larger throttle bodies and rubbers, so i'm pretty sure you need to change the cross bracing in your frame (lower it by about 25mm) I put a 748RS motor into a 748 bp frame and had to do the same, bit of a pain but the chap that makes race frames for us did it for about £150. its a bit of welding and fabricating. and you need to completely strip the frame, ideal opportunity for a flashy frame paint tho!!! You will need to open the holes for the engine mounting bolts too, 748 use 10mm bolts, 998S use 12mm. you can sleave down the motor or open the chassis. have you got the loom and ecu for the 998S ?? its all different to the 748. And you will need new exhaust headers. but is does go in, and is a MEGA motor! |

no i havent got the engine yet either, its at idea stage right now, along with a couple of other possibliities for next year, "awsome motor" yes its is isnt it, inspired by my love for my 996r, perhaps i should just track bike the 996r, no maybe not the worry would kill me does anyone know which frames from which model bikes have this lower cross bracing, for example does the 998bp frame? maybe i should just buy another track bike thats already sorted? :puzzled: so errr would a 996sps motor fit in my 748 frame??:eureka: just not sure what i might be riding on trackdays next year as im thinking of giving up the road riding, if things dont change theyl just remain the same |
frame The 748 R frame has a different cross brace to the standard frame. |
You have a real problem... you have a 996R and its spoilt you! but... Any of the testastretta frames or 748R or 748RS have the lower cross bracing and repositioned coil mounts (and larger engine mounting bolts) basically because these models have shower flow injectors and larger airbox's. A 996SPS motor will go straight in, as will 996S, you could then use your 748 loom / ECU with a new Eprom, and use a set of 916 or 996 (with 1 injector unplugged) throttle bodies, you could use your 748 ones but it would be best to get the WSS 45mm restrictors removed. However, you just can't beat a Testastretta!, if you can find an S cam'd motor (998S or 996R - good luck) complete with loom and exhuast headers from a breaker then you are laffing!:lol: |
