Preparation for Brands II

Well...I actually did some (preparation, that is)!

I took off the front sprocket cover this morning (there's always a first time for everything!) whilst waking myself up with the customary cuppa....to reveal......a fifteen tooth "cog"!

That'll never do.....the others will all be laughing at me!

Any ideas at this (too?) late stage where I could beg / steal / purchase one of these said necessaties? :puzzled::puzzled:

nope

Sorry Andy, my 900 has a 15t on it so I can't rogue one off her either. If it's any consolation the rear sprocket I ordered on Monday from B&C Express has completely failed to arrive as well! Arse.

I will not be laughing at you Andy as I will be running 15T front with either 42T of 43T rear.
I think I have a 14T for a 520 chain somewhere I will have a check and can always bring it with me.

What's a 520 chain?

Do I have one?

If I do, your 14-tooth "cog" would be greatly appreciated:D

(If it makes me go quicker, that is!)

I also found my bike had the std 15/41 gearing.
So I ordered a 14 and a 43 from B&C over the web at the weekend and they phoned me on monday to let me know the 43 wasnt in stock - so I decided on a 44 instead.
They arrived on tuesday.

The moral is ... check whether what you want is in stock when you order at the last moment ;)
And ... B&C may be able to get a 14 to you by tomorrow if you ask nicely :D

See http://www.bandcexpress.co.uk/

Chain links come in different sizes, so you need to match your chain to your sprockets (or vice versa) to ensure they all work together correctly.

There are various different dimensions to consider - chain pitch (the distance between the rollers), chain width (distance between side plates) and the roller size being but three of them.

For a 520 chain, the pitch (p) is 15.875mm, width (w) is 6.25mm and the roller distance (Dr) is 10.16mm

For a 525 chain, the pitch (p) is 15.875mm, width (w) is 7.75mm and the roller distance (Dr) is 10.16mm

So while 520 and 525 chains are very similar, it's the distance between the sideplates which differs, so you need thicker sprockets - a 525 chain usually goes on more powerful machines.

Ducati use 525 chains on all their current models for economy and standardisation. The 748 (except the R) has a 520 chain and the 916+ have a 525 chain. I believe the 600 line also had a 520 chain as standard, but it should be stamped on the side plates to tell you what it is.

The reason for using a 520 chain over a 525 is that a 520 chain will be lighter than the same size 525 chain, and with therefore reduce the amount of power taken by the drivechain (as a heavier chain will take more effort to move by the engine) giving you more power at the back wheel. Ok, so we're only talking hundredths of bhp here, but every little helps ;)

Ducati use the same front sprocket on just about all of their bikes, so a 748 front sprocket (14t) will also fit, so you might have better luck getting one by asking for that instead from a dealer.

The snot currently has 15/45, with a 520 chain.

Sprockets will be most likely to be changed when we get there 9as what is on, is what Andy wanted for Donny

We do have 2 x 14's, but will prob need both ;) - AK thinks he might have another somewhere, will look later for anyone who is desperate??
