Yamaha R1 SP Read about the Yamaha R1 SP in MCN today. Apparently, apart from the black and gold paint job it's pretty much a standard R1 with uprated suspension and wheels. A lot is made of the facts that Dukes are expensive, so it struck me if you treat a factory built Japanese bike to Ohlins all round, radial brakes and Marchesini wheels, just like the 999S has, the R1 suddenly costs £13-14000...just like the 999S does. Funny that! |
thought they were quoting c10k for it? |
Must be a new model coming along! Andrew |

They were quoting 10K + which is read 10K++++++ It's also 1Kg heavier????? There's logic in it somewhere but I've yet to see it. In all honesty it's the usual method adopted to sell more of this model before the major changes come, which will probably be the year after, no doubt to bring it more in line with the new R6. Hence why there's an SP model and also the old skool yellow scheme. |
10K :puzzled::puzzled::puzzled: Have I got a different copy of this weeks MCN to everyone else then? Front page quote "It's the best R1 ever, but is it worth the £13,000 asking price? Full test, page 24" Flick, flick, flick...turn to page 24....first paragraph...quote "Yamaha is waiting until the NEC show to reveal the price, which will be around £13,000-14,000" Read the spec and it's a pretty standard R1 with a black and gold paint job. The only major difference is that it has Marchesinis and Ohlins front and rear. Don't get me wrong...I don't hanker after an R1 of any sort, just an observation that if you nail full Ohlins and Marchesinis onto an R1 as standard equipment it suddenly costs as much as a Duke that has full Ohlins and Marchesinis as standard equipment. On another MCN related note...I think I'm going to write the copy for all the 2007 Jap bikes now - here goes.... The new Fireblade/R1/GSXR/ZX (delete as appropriate) is smaller, lighter and more powerful for 2007 in a bid to wrest the best in class crown away from the current Fireblade/R1/GSXR/ZX (delete as appropriate)...pretty soon the 'King of the litre bikes' will be making 200 bhp at the rear wheel and be the size of a mini moto. I do like the wheels on the 2006 Suzuki's though, 3 spokes but with each spoke about as slim as a Marchesini 5 spoker...looks good to me |
Haven't got this weeks MCN yet so I that's my excuse. I'm going off last weeks. I had an '04 R1 and since switched to a 748, hasten to add it gets far more attention and more good comments than the R1 ever did. Not that I'm motivated that way but it's nice to know others appreciate it. |
