coating on engine cases.
 

While im on the subject of engine rebuilds,..............

Does any one know of a good firm or DIY product that would enable me to paint/coat the engine cases on my 996 lump?

I am looking at the clutch casing and alternater/water pump covers. Along with the cam covers and desmo inspection covers. I am thinking along the lines of a gloss/satin black.

The engine heads, barrells and crank cases I want to keep silver. I would imagine that they will clean up very well with a bit of elbow grease etc.

Nelly has just done this to his new engine...looks good & a really good finish.
I know the place he had it done at is on the same industrial estate as his place is on.. give him a bell.

There's no real rocket science involved in this one :)

I had all the parts shot blasted, using quite a coarse shot, then sprayed them with PJ1 satin black engine case paint.
The coarse shot gives the alloy a rough finish, and IMO, really sets the cases off. The only techy bit here is that it's increased the surface area and with the black paint helps radiate more heat off the motor ;)

When the parts are blasted, i left any seals and inspection glasses in place to mask the machined surfaces. Also fit old screws into any exposed treads.
Make sure the water pump is extremely well masked around the pipe outlets else you'll be replacing the internal seal like I had to :puzzled:

I've also painted the cam belt covers black, which also sets the motor off.

Use all fresh stainless screws in the cases and you end up with a really nice looking lump :)

I was thinking along the lines of shot blasting etc. As for the PJ1 paint. I have used that before. I used the enamel I think, on a set of GSXr rims years ago. Its good stuff.

I like the look that you have ended up with on the cases. Very nice. And Very nice looking lump in the frame too.;)

Nelly's motor looks the dogs and i've seen a few other he's used the same process on which look just as good.
