749 Biposto Tickover 2 When I first got the 749 at the end of August you lovely people told me how th adjust the tickover up so that it didn't keep stalling. I took it for it's first service and the garage turned it back down a bit. As the weather turned cold the bike would keep stalling again at juctions etc. So I've had the bung out of the airbox to turn it up again. I can get it to tickover at about 2000rpm for a few seconds and then it drops down to just over a 1000rpm again. No matter how much I turn the tickover screw I can't get it to maintain a tickover as high as when I first adjusted it (1500rpm). It isn't stalling as much but it is ****ing me off to the extent that if I can't sort it and I ride another V-Twin thats nearly as good I might get rid. Or even go back to a jap four. Any Ideas, I just don't tolerate machines that don't run properly and I don't see why I should have to waste money on bullshit power commanders and things on a standard bike. |
Take it back to the garage and get them to adjust the tick-over. mine cuts out on tick-over now and again,I've just fitted a Termi exhaust and on the first ride with it fitted it must have cut out 5 times, but yesterday not at all:roll: see if it settles down if not take it back. the problem with setting the tick-over you have to set the potentiometer as well.:puzzled: |
Agreed - get the garage to do it. Mine started doing it a bit again after having Termis fitted, but it has settled a little. I'll be asking my dealer to check it over next time it goes in. |
Spank I have been having trouble with the 749R mine has been cutting out at slow speed (filtering for example). I complained directly to Ducati who have agreed to re-set the fueling (CO2 between cyclinders e.t.c.), this has been done twice now and it still happens :rolleye: Something strange is that most occassions i pull the clutch in and it fires up but on at least two occassions I have had to coast to a stop put her in neutral and then fire her up. Mine I am guessing is something more than just set up and I will be contacting the dealer again today (the dealer has been great by the way "Woods"). Being a control sysems engineer I would luv to know what processor Ducati use and the cycle times they are using for the software because I personally think this could be a more software/hardware problem. Also a point of note, I am aware the datatool 3 alarms can cause problems if not mounted correctly (vibration) resulting in what appears like early activation of the rev limiter. Stalling on the 749 has been a common topic on this board. Mine suffered the same way, with the bike regularly stalling as I was about to pull out into traffic. It CAN be adjusted though, most get done on first service (600 mile) when it's all loosened up. I was told that the CO filters needed replacing on the setup equipment, but there would be a variety of reasons. I think it is more ot do with the balancing between the cylinders to be honest. Idle speed on my bike has always been just under 1500 rpm. [Edited on 17-10-2005 by HW] |
The butterfly balance between the cylinders is important as is the Co, If the butterflys are out the bike will sound a bit like a mono just off tick-over as the first cylinder picks up. The tick-over on mine has always been about 1200rpm |
Mine has been in and out of he dealers, doing the same thing. It is still there....for the foreseable future anyway! |

Simply changing the centreline settings for the cams to reduce overlap. It amazes me that such a small change in timing can have such a pronounced effect on how the bikes idle (probably part of the reason why my 851 idles so badly). These 04 749S cams are the longest duration of any of the Testastretta cams. 998 refers to base model 998 and 999. Not the 05 999 though afaik. 998S refers to the Euro spec 998S. The USA spec 998S has the base model 998 engine. These cams are also fitted to the 996R, 998R, 999S (both Euro and USA) and the 03 999R. Not sure about the 05 999R yet. The 05 999 has these cams I believe. The 749 and 749S share the same valve spacing, which is different to the 998/999 valve spacing. I believe the 05 999R may also have unique valve spacing, as does the 749R. Therefore the cams do not swap. |
Ah the garage said they had to adjust/check the valves on the first service, so this could be why the tickover went back to being low. It does tickover at about 2000rpm when cold but as soon as it's warm it goes down to about 1200rpm. It only cuts out about once every other ride, I suppose if nothing else goes wrong I learn to live with it as it's such an awsome bike. It's bog standard by the way and it hasn't even got an alarm thats whats so annoying. |
