Booze cruise advice wanted

Heading off to Calais tomorrow to stock up on wine etc. Haven't been over for 5/6 years, just wondered if anyone has any suggestions for the best wine warehouses to visit.

Remeber in the past visiting 2 next door to each other right by an Autoroute junction, behind a big Elf garage, but I guess some will have closed and there will be other new ones open since then

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Martin

There's now a big Tesco not far from the Eurotunnel Martin.

I've not been for a few years either but the last time we went we just piled in there.

They had barcode readers screwed to the stanchions on every isle so you just picked your bottle from the shelf, walked over ot the reader, scanned it and got a price in Euro's and £'s instantly per bottle and per case.

Turned out to be much easier than trying to find the warehouse we used the time before and we still saved a heap VS UK pricing.

Ooh ... maybe I sould go over before I sell the van!

Actually, how does the cost stack up after paying for the trip over there, fuel etc? Bearing in mind some of you, especially you Guy, have a long way to go to get there, and therefore spend a fair bit on fuel.

What sort of volume buy are you talking to make it worthwhile?

Tony - we're going as much for a day out as anything. I have a couple of days holiday that I have to get in before the end of the year so it seemed like a good plan.
Eurotunnel at sensible times is costing £55 - could have gone cheaper on the ferry but I prefer the convenience.
Not sure what savings there are to be had, but I reckon you'd have to buy a shed load of booze to really make it pay.

When I last went over about 4 years ago we got an overnight Eurostar ticket - think it was £9 return but you had to travel over at 11pm and come back at about 7am the next morning.....

I got about £350-£500 worth of Wine and beer as did my mate.

We were buying really nice St Emillion, Graves, Bordeaux, DOCGChianti Classico Reserva etc for about £2-£3 a bottle Vs £4-£7 back in the UK. At that time the obligatory 24 crate of Boddys was £9-£10 Vs £18 on sale in my local Morrisons, so 10 crates of that made the trip worthwhile let alone the savings on wine (and got us through the Christmas parties).

May have levelled out a bit now with the passage of time but you can still make good savings on wine

Most important thing......is to rememebr the old 4X advert...

I went recently and it cost me £29 on the tunnel.

Go to Euro City, just follow the signs from the train.
