Wheels compatibility
 

Hi,

Are wheels for the 600 and the 620 bikes the same? Just to know if I will be able to fit my 620 Sport spare wheels to the 600 Monster (year 1999) as I already know that the front wheel axle is different...

Spindle Sizes are the thing to look out for. Earlier ones are smaller. Neither of my bikes have the larger front spindle making interchangability difficult.

I have bearings and spacer for a 20mm spindle front wheel (600SS) if any body want to swap for a spacer from the larger 25mm setup (620)

It will fit, it should just be a case of swapping bearings and spacer. Easy peasy. Especially as Skids is looking for a swap.

If you have the hollow spindle in your monster front wheel, the 620 sport ones will fit straight in.
If its the solid spindle, then you will have to change the bearings and spacer (could cost up to £50+/- in bits)

(Hollow - big, like all later bikes, and solid - smaller diameter spindle)

Will very much depend on the front forks you have in the bike as to what spindle it has, the later (98 - 01) carbed monsters had a mixture, so this is very very confusing!!

Usually, showa's had hollow and Marzocci had solid - but this is not always the case!! (as I have found out!!)

Rear wheel from your 620sport - definately wont fit a 99 monster, unless you change the bearings and spacers. There are more than one size of rear wheel bearing diameter and spacer tho........

It might be cheaper to pick up replacements if you need to start doing bearings (unless you are doing the work yourself) and flog your wheels to someone else.

Actually I don't think to be able to swap the bearings by myself. I prefer to sell them and if needed next year I'll look for some with the right bearings fitted...

Its not exactly hard, I had to do mine in the paddock at Donington when I had the new Diablos fitted to my spare wheels then realised the last time I had the spare wheels in the bike I had the early forks with the smaller spindle. Even without a proper punch it didn't take long to change bearings and spacer from one wheel to another.

But anyway that's now done, the wheels are sold. I didn't think I would need a spare set of wheels for next season, I didn't even need to change a single tyre on the 620, I can't see why I would change a wheel on the 583... And furthermore I won't have the room to carry them (next season will be again car/tent/trailer... can't afford much) so I'm already thinking about reducing the amount of stuff I carried with me this season for nothing.
