916 issues Hi all, I bought a 1995 916 with SP cams (i don't know which kind yet) set to work in the upper range (bike has a custom eprom and has 12000 rpm limit). It pulls well over 7000 rpm, but unfortunatelly i don;t use the bike for race only (as it has been used before), but 70% of the time for street. What i want to do is set the cams to the normal 916 range and then order a FIM eprom to suit this. Can anybody tell me what is the normal setting for the std, A/A, G/A, 996 SPS cams so i can dial them to the factory setting. also, can anybody help me understand what is the best setting i could do to benefit most of the cams? Thanks and regards |
You sound as if you want the full story :D Try reading some of this guy's stuff http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance/index.html |
Oh, welcome to the board by the way, and thank you for asking, I'll have an ice-cold Guinness while you're at the v-bar :D |
The SP cams are a "racy" grind. It's not a case of dialling them to a softer setting, but swapping them for probably BP cams will be the only real way you'll get the low/mid range back for road riding. |
Thanks Phil :D:D:D Nelly, But the standard 916 SP was still a road bike... how was the driveability in the lower/mid range? |
It was great... if you pay for the work to be done, i'll have the SP cams and EPROM :) you can have the stock items from my 98' 916 :) |

By the mere fact your asking this i would suggest it is a tad confusing! i would suggest you go to a trained professional and tell them what you want! |
indeed andy i'm a bit confused because there are a lot of things i don't know about my current engine setup. I started a discussion with Brad from Moto one about this and i hope i'll get some clarifications. The first thing i need to do is to find out what cams i have. This can be done by measuring them or by checking the marks (numbers/letter) stamped on. does anybody have an idea what are the possible codes written on them? I checked a set of standard ones and it has OA/OS and VA/VS on them (which means Orizontal Admission/Exhaust Vertical Adm/Exh of course) and A1 I guess A1 is the sort of code Brad was talking about... Does anybody have an idea? Thanks |
Cipi, I have just taken a set of standard Strada cams (A1 grind) out of a low mileage 996 motor if you need 'em. Rgds, Rob |
Thanks Rob, but i have another 748 engine that has the vertical cylinder head cracked and i keep it as spare parts. Regards, Cipi |
