Got it! all I can say is.... DESMO ME UP!!! Jeez!! This thing pulls my arms out of their sockets! And I love the sound, so thumpy! She started on the button 1st thing this morning even after a 3.5 hour trip down the M5 on the bike trailer. Just a couple of questions... 1. what is a safe amount to rev it up to when riding? 2 Is it common for the choke cable to not really be effective? As mine doesn't seem to rev or idle any differently with it on... 3. does it need a steering damper? 4. How sexy are they??! thanks paul |
I recentley picked up a 750SS to convert to a Minitwin racer. Rev wise I wouldn't go beyond 9k and as far as the power range is concerned I suspect it starts to drop off just after 8000rpm, I will know more when my bike is finished and been on a Dyno when my choke lever is fully pushed forward the bike certainly revs higher Doubt if you will need a steering damper with the standard shock but may need one if you decide to fit a 900SSie shock to raise the rear Sexy ???? Looks = not really, Sound = depends on exhaust and airbox lid mods. If you need a right hand caliper I have one I could sell |
Congratulations Paul. Enjoy :) The choke lever should bring the revs up as well as richening the mixture. There is probably too much slack in the cable. It pulls on a linkage which slides across allowing the choke plungers on each carb to move out. You won't really be able to see what's happening without taking the airbox off. But I'm sure you'll be taking the time over the next few weeks to give the bike a good going over. Cheers |

Not sure on the older carbed SS bikes, but my revious '99 injection model 750ss had a rev limiter. Rev it until it won't rev no more. I rarely hit the limiter in truth, probably only on track days. Sterring damper, never used or needed one. And your choke cable should work :-) You'll need it in winter! |
I thought it might just be a bit slack, my rgv had a sticking choke problem so Im well trained in that department! I think i prefer to use the torque rather than the revs to ride it... Is there an Idle adjust screw? It might not need sorting, but maybe its because of my dodgy choke, as I only work 2 miles away from home and Im not sure its hot enough when I get to work... |
Well done Paul - good man. Questions all seem to of been answered - Skids has been spoilt by too many toys to play with :D - of course the SS is a classic, not as 'Iconic' as a 916 but they do look 'Right' in my opinion. Congratulations Paolo! Another member with good taste. On warming up, make sure that you leave the bike running for a couple of minutes before setting off as it needs time to get oil to the top of the cylinder - I know it must be tempting to just get on and ride, especially if you only live 2 miles from work. |
yeah, being a big 2 stroke nut I always warm all things up before I get going. Car, rgv, Duke etc... my friends think im wierd. 1st problem with the Duke... clutch slips under full throttle at about 7,000 rpms, its fine around town and half throttle/3 quater throttle, but the revs shoot up to about 9,000 and it goes into "moped" mode as i like to call it! Do I need a new clutch? Is there a way to check and adjust? it has the oil clutch too... |
