DVD Player repair - advice required !!!

This forum never ceases to amaze me with its breadth of contacts so here we go.

Bought a panasonic DVD/Video combo just under 2 years ago (£400 - although I see you can now got one for about £150...), and after my 2 young kids ramming just about every item you can imagine into the DVD player, its finally given up (tray wont stay in is one of the main problems).

To add insult to injury I cant find the instructions which I thought might have given me a pointer in terms of repair centres (and an explanation of what 'error code H01 means...:()

I get the feeling as they've come down in price so much, its probably going to be cheaper to just buy a new one, but it just seems such a shame as i've hardly bleedin' used it !!!

Anyone got any recommendations for a repair place and/or have an idea of what an inspection/fix would cost ??

Cheers
Nat:(

Panasonic have a site http://manuals.panasonic.co.uk

The error codes also pop up alot if you do a google search, looks like its a common one with panasonic units. Seems to point to timeouts and some people mention trying to clean the lens helps.

I Paid £400 for a top of the range Toshiba DVD player some years ago and it lasted 13 months before it wouldn't read discs. Took it back and they didnt want to know. Contacted Toshiba and nothing. Tried to find some info on it and re-aligned the laser, still no good. Now got a Sony £150 unit which is better and 3yrs old!!! I wont buy top of the range again, grrrrr.

Summary: Electrical items are consumable now, although not good for the environment.

:saint:Bloody Sainsbury's are doing Sony DVD recorders for £165.00 or Sony DVD players for £39.00.It's not worth having the old one fixed mate.:D

Buy the cheapest one you can get away with cos you will be replacing it with a high-def one in a couple of years.

I was in Costco at the weekend and they had a big screen with HD demo video on it. The actual quality of the content was rubbish (think of the most boring home movie you have ever seen and then imagine John Major doing the narration) but the picture was so beautiful that I just stood there for about 15 minutes.

Can't believe your blaming the kids... I've seen you trying to insert your 12" vinyls (the best of Shakin Stevens)!!!!:P:P

My daughter managed to get 6 dvd disks into our slot-loading Phillips dvd player - I'm sure that's some kind of record! It took me ages to remove the cover and get them all out but it still works a treat.
