Changing Eproms
 

I've fitted a 45/50mm half system to my 996 (and by god it was hard work getting the termis to fit with only 2 hands , my forehead and one of my legs).

I have a new eprom to fit and the furthest i've been is removing the round bit above the eprom. I know i have to remove the two blobs of silicone then extract the chip but that sounds easy and i do not want to break anything.

Can someone please talk me through the process as i don't want to go cack-handed into this. My dealer says it's easy peasy but i'd rather be forewarned of potential pitfalls.

pedro 749r fitted my temi,s for me but i took my bike in to JHP coventry to have my ECU fitted and set up .these jobs are best left to pro,s you could end up fecking it up ;)

If you have a Maplins near by,they sell a eprom remover,very cheap and does the job well.Theres also an eprom installer,but not much use in the confined space of the ecu.When I last changed one the chip was tight and needed a good tug.

It is a simple job, but the trick is generally to be gentle !
Because the space is tight I use a medium screwdriver that I bent about 3mm of the end at right angles - which I use to gently lever under each end between the chip and its socket a little bit until it moves.
If you tug them you can easily bend the pins, which are difficult to get in line again so they fit back in easily - the pins have to be exactly in line.
The more exacting bit is getting a chip in if its legs are not lined up exactly with the socket - and to help this I put the chip on its side on the metal lid and gently spring them closer together a little bit at a time.

I've had mucho practice at this, as I've been an electronics engineer for 25 years :o

And if it all goes pear-shaped - I have an open offer to anyone local that I'll either come round and help, or you send me the prom and if its still got all its legs I'll blow another one or straighten the legs properly.

My new Eprom came with a removal tool.

Thanks for the tips guys. I hadn't thought of the bent screwdriver method so i'll give that a gentle whirl and see how i get on.

I changed my e-prom not so long ago, I used a e-prom remover from maplins, there is also no need to remove the silicone lumps.
Just take your time a good steady hand ease the tool either side of the prom and lift up each a bit at a time but be quite firm.
When putting in the new prom ease one side of the legs in making sure each leg is in place, then pop the other side in.
Dont rush take your time, when the legs are in gentle push the e-prom all the way in place.
Dont worry about anti static but handle the prom as little as possible.

Ignor the labels on the eprom chips they are often on the wrong way round.

Instead, note the notch out of one of the ends (a semi circle notch out of one end of the top of the chip)

make sure the new one goes in with the notch at the same end as the old one came out.

This is the most common cause for the bike not running on the new chip!
