Swarf Near Chain Area I've noticed a bit of swarf building up on and around the swingarm and chain guard recently. TBH: I'm not the most diligent person for regularly adjusting or lubing the chain. :rolleye: Well, actually, I do lube it quite often, but I never seem to get round to adjusting it. I've never noticed anything like this before on any of my previous bikes. Should I be concerned about it? Thanks [Edited on 12-3-2006 by zhed44] |
yes you should ! is it sumit t do wi cush drives falling out ? |
cush drives check em |
noticed something like this once YEP ( as said) its prob the cush drives working their way out of the back of the sprocket |
i've just been out to check and yes, one of them is working its way out and starting to machine the face of the bearing holder(?) (the thing that adjusts the slack in the chain). roughly how much to fix? thanks |
£60 for the bushes, but may have cracked bush housing on the sprocket it self, £120 for the standard from ducati.. £130 for the renthal quick change carrier, if you have to change the sprocket, go for the renthal, works out cheaper in the end.... Bushes are easy to do, once you've got the sprocket/hub off, most stands go though that side,if you have the stand that comes in from the other side your laughing, if not this may help....with rear sets, it's just a case or putting axle stands under them, or you can reverse the standard pegs, so they dont fold up, and then place the axle stands under.(tip from Ducati!) Otherwise it's a bit of a game trying to work using the side stand. Although it can be done, as i had no axle stands when i changed mine.... |

thanks. will anything else need replacing? ie: the bearing holder thingy |
when i had this problem i got a complete second hand sprocket and kush drive with carrier from JIm at bikeenders for about 15quid, bargin by comparison to new prices |
It sounds like he's got the dreaded sprocket-flange wear ... the same problem I had. If he has a standard sprocket flange, then it uses a circlip to hold a spacer and washers in place, to keep everything in line. The only problem is that the circlip groove wears and so you get free play in it. The next thing that happens is that your sprocket flange starts to grind down against the hub. Changing to a new sprocket carrier won't fix this - you need a whole new sprocket flange using the new design that eliminates the circlip retainer with one big spacer. The bad news is that these cost about 95 quid for the sprocket flange and another 7 quid for the spacer from Ducati. The good news is that you can sometimes get them from breakers for around 30-40 quid delivered ... I paid 35 quid inc p&p for mine. The best way to ensure you get the right part is to ask for the sprocket flange and spacer from a 998 as these all had the revised spacer rather than the circlip. http://ducatisportingclub.com/xmb/vi...d.php?tid=6972 [Edited on 13-3-2006 by antonye] |
