fitting oil cooler
 
Good evening all,
I have just got a oil cooler off flebay and was wondering if i need to change anything eg oil pump etc to be able to fit this to a 748bp or can i just bolt it on and fill it with oil

Don't forget to also fit the bypass valve, it's the little curved blade under the oil filter adapter within the oil filter housing. These are not fitted to BPs and are forgotten as part of the upgrade. Good luck

Is the bike running hot as standard?

In addition to RayKay's comment, you will also need to change the cylinder head oil feed routing. This can be done using the existing hoses by jiggling th efittings around or you could buy a pre-made set from a 9*6/748SP model.
The bypass valve is only a few quid from a dealer.

I have got all the pipes with the cooler so that shouldnt be a problem and this bypass valve just screws on before the oil filter is that right????. No Rockhopper its not running hot but i am going to put an 853 kit on in the near future and have been told it would be better if i fit a cooler too

Fair enough, just that if you fit a cooler and the bikes not running hot then you'll have more problems with the oil not getting hot enough. Not a bad idea to fit one along with an 853 kit though.

Spookily, I found that after I'd fitted an oil cooler to my 748BP, the water temp gauge read a few degrees higher than it had done prior to the cooler!

I rekon that this was probably due to the oil cooler "blocking" the v-piece vent that had previously allowed cooling air to cool the engine. In addition to blocking the vent, the oil cooler would actually heat up the air in the fairing as the air exiting it would have been heated by the oil it was cooling.

Dunno what it does to the actual oil temperature...hopefully it was cooling it.

It's a question of thermal heat transfer and fluid dynamics...help.

Oil needs to get to a certain temperature for it to work correctly. If its too cool then moisture will not evaporate for example.
I think if the bike has an oil temperature problem then Ducati would have fitted a cooler at the factory.For a modified bike or one thats raced then its a good idea.
