Gold (TIN) treatment on fork stanchions Is that cheap/expensive? Soon I should get my forks back (for my road bike and my DD bike), my road stanchions being fitted on my race forks are its stanchions were not in a good condition. So what can I do with my bad stanchions? As to pay for having them retreated, I would prefer going for a gold treatment... Thing is... the weather is now very good, I WANT TO RIDE  Thanks in advance for your help. |
If your stanchions are in bad shape such as nicks, pitting, etc. then you need to have the surface restored before getting any special surface coating applied. You can send them off to be re-chromed where they reapply the hard chromium and grind it down to a new surface. Not sure what that costs but look in the back of MCN for firms that can do this. There should be plenty and people on this board (are there any left?) might have a recommendation or two. The TiN coating can be done by someone like Tec-Vac and is aroung 60 quid a tube. For DD, I doubt this would be money well spent, but that's only my opinion.;) |
Cheers mate. I do agree with you, wouldn't do it for my race bike, that's for my road bike :) |
You'll be on "pimp my ride" next.:P:lol: |
I think someone wanted about £100 to rechrome an M600 leg including getting the bottom bit off. New shiny bits are about the same price but are on a very long delivery time (8 weeks i think it was). |

A bit I pricey I think, but fortunately my stanchions are already taken apart from the forks bottom... |
That price was for a stripped fork apart from the bottom bit! They would take the bottom off and post it back to me. We went for the new tube route because i have heard bad tales about rechroming (maybe unjustified). Nelly had a heck of a job changing it though. |
cheers for the information mate. bottom bit already taken off on mine, which is the biggest part of the job... |
