Ducati 916 \'97 battery light on???

Hi, Newbie here...have read all the other posts on this subject...but mine is a little different, so here goes!!..

Went out for a spin, goin great, then noticed that the battery light was on when i stopped at a traffic light on tick over...a few revs (just over 2000rmp) it went out?..er ok!, i stopped...had a quick look...but nothing in ya face if you know what i mean.

So, get it home i thought, but..in true Danny style, i stalled it!...and hey guess what, no way she was guna go again, battery totally dead...lucky i was near a hill (so glad as i have bad asthma and would have been curtains for me to push it!! ).. a bump start got me goin and home i got!!

Unlike other posts it did not cough or splutter at all...just rode home ok, ( about 10 miles )...stopped it, and deff no go again...so here i looked for possible causes...read loads of great posts on similar subjects/causes but nothing exactly the same...So..

Have checked all plastic plugs, wires for heat damage, everything listed on the most helpfull posts i have ever read!...found nothing wrong?...so i think it must be the reg/rec? i have checked and by viewing a pic on another post here it is the old unit i have... the only thing is reading all the other posts here its just not the same as my " battery light on at idle and then goin out again over 2000rpm " style... so any idea's or help would be great before i order a new one, and i guess the best place to get one from is Electrex?, any one had the same?...many thanks for your time reading this....Danny.

dodgy.
how you doing ? well apart from the bike issue.
difficult to say what your problem is without a few further test I'm afraid.
do you have a volt meter ? and what about a battery charger ?
if not get a charger at least. not expensive. and charge the battery. (which may also be a possible cause especially as you say there are no problems when running. it may not be holding a charge) any way charge it and see if it starts.
then come back here for more :)
PS just do a quick check that the back of the starter solenoid to make sure the quick connector is pushed in properly.
PPS be careful when touching wires around the battery you could get a big surprise :borg:

Hi, many thanks for the reply!, she starts up fine with a fresh battery, but light is still on tho ...also have checked and cleaned every wire and terminal, all good! i know that its not putting a charge into the battery as it was fine the day before.....er.....

Hi dodgydan

Check the posts under 851 / 888 and you'll find that my own SP4 did the very same thing just a few months ago. I rode the bike home without noticing there was even a problem, but as I pulled up on the drive and the revs dropped, on came the light. Same symptoms as yours - would go out above 2,000rpm.

I fitted an Electrex regulator, and the problem's cured. Cost me about £70 in total. It's easy to fit - it's a straight swap and plug in.

Here's the original post dodgydan. As you can see, the symptoms were identical. (But don't blame me if it doesn't fix it!)

Best of luck..
