Wheel internals - a question.

What is the purpose of the metal tube between the two wheel bearings of most wheels???

Is it simply there to ease guiding of the spindle from one side to the other or is there more to it?

Perhaps for in the event of bearing failure,

I'm wondering how necessary it is to have the tube in place.

To stop the bearing inner races being pushed in when you tighten the wheel. And no... you can't leave it out. I've seen what happens when you do!
