851SPTC ?? I have recently bought a 1990 851, and the Cagiva paperwork stated that this bike is an 851 SPTC, what does the TC stand for??? I gather that the SP means Sport Production?, can you experienced knowledgable people help me out. It also has low mounted mufflers and was sporting a dual seat when I got it! Not sure about the TC bit...but early SP's had low slung exhausts. If you ring DUK with the chassis number they should be able to give you a steer. Will get your new mudguard off today Greg.. Cheers Nat |

Hi Greg The SP2/3/4 and 5 were all 888 cc. If it was an SP2 (1990), the chassis number would confirm this, ie; ZDM888S*****. The 851Strada was numbered ***851S****. The 888cc SP2 did have low mounted mufflers, but it came (as did all SP models) with an aluminium subframe beneath the seat, and this wouldn't support a dual-seat. It also had Ohlins suspension front and rear, and a silver plaque on the top yoke bearing its production number. Maybe Phil911 has hit on the right answer to the 'TC' initials. (The only other 'TC' 851 was the early 'Tri-Colore' - but I don't know if this would be recorded on the docs). Steve |
I wrote to Ducati with the Vin# and engine number and they also said "Referring to your request we kindly invite you to send us pictures of the bike: - Headlight - Fuel tank - Engine -Side bike picture this will be helpful for us." and that was after I supplied that info so,..................... Vin#ZDM1HB6P1LB001362 engine #001419 any help in deciphering this info?? Thanks as always, Kiwigreg |

It is indeed possible that Phil is correct. Because did you all know that the 888 SP(4)S is not the only special edition of the SP version? A friend of mine has a 851 SP(2)S. The difference with a normal SP? Well, the engine is more corsa than the standard SP2 engine and it has also a nr, like the bike. So the bike has a nr and the engine has his own nr. you mean the engine has its own number? also, where is the identifying number on the ECu box(P7?-P8?), apparently, not under the lid! Is it on the bottom Bike is currently in friends garage, I was over yesterday and took detailed pictures to send to Ducati and they said that they will verify its identity, we shall go from there! Thank you to all who have taken the time to comment, ..............interesting though that with all the knowledge present here, that a model ID can still be a very difficult decifering issue with these type of motorcycles, Kiwigreg |
if it's a 1990 model it should have a P7, the P8 ECU was fitted to the 888 93 model and the early ones of those (first 500 i think) still had a P7. |
