Noise from tank?

Bike was left out in the rain this morning. I went out to wipe it down a bit lunch time. Suddenly it starts making a sound like an asthmatic fuel pump:o
Rode it home tonight and I got the sound again together with with some clicking when I turned the engine off. With the fuel cap open it seamed like it was coming from inside the tank. The sounds kept coming and going.
I did the fault code check but didn't have any codes showing. Any ideas what it might be?:puzzled:

just the venting of the pressure in the tank. When it starts open the petrol cap and it will stop. It's normal - your bike is calling you.

my gixxer did the same .its the presure in the tank..happend more when it was warm weather

No it is definitely not tank vacuum. Noise continues when filler cap is open. :barfy:

Twinfan 09-May-2006 09:58

749/999 models can get rusty tanks around the filler cap if water is left standing around them for a while. See if you can check inside the tank if it's rusted under the filler cap, and if so it's let water in and maybe knackered your fuel pump?

Bike is running fine again this morning so presumably the fuel pump is ok. No rust around the filler cap area or anywhere else. My feeling is that this is an electrical problem caused by rain yesterday getting to somewhere it shouldn't. Injector Relay?

Mine was doing the same, its the fuel pump still running due to a faulty relay ( Stuck) Took the battery tray out and tapped the relay and all has been fine since.

Was yours just doing it when the bike had had a soaking? Did it make a different sound to the normal fuel pump noise? Is the battery tray the moulding that the battery sits into? Is it the injection relay and does this sit behind the moulding?
Cheers.

Hi Trig, Started to do it now and again just like yours but in the dry. You could hear it running for 2 to 3 mins after you turned engine off then would stop. One day it just would not stop so had to take battery out, someone on this site thought it was the fuel pump relay so I had a look. Yes battery tray is what the battery sits in, bit I tapped was on the bottom left corner, behind the tray silver or gold colour. I did not take the tray all the way out.
If you want to ring me mobile is 07771 560228
Cheers

Thanks Pete. Hopefully I will get a chance to look at the relay this weekend:)
