Broadband/modem problem. Help!

Whatever I do I cannot get my broadband to work. I have reconnected my old modem to post this. Broadband modem is a Sagem F@st 800. Whenever I try to connect I get a message saying no dial tone. I have rung Tiscali and got through to a call centre on the planet Mars and been taken through a process of uninstalling and reinstalling my modem which did bugger all. The man I spoke to then announced that on his screen he had notice that BT were doing some work on a line in my area and it would be back on at 11pm.

I phoned BT who denied any work was going on so I rephoned Tiscali and this time was put through to a call centre on the planet Venus I told them what BT had said and the bloke again said his screen said BT were doing some work and it would be back on at 10.46!?

His word if they make any sense to anyone were something like "we have done a whoosh test and a trouble ticket has been raised for maintenance by BT, the work will cease at 10.46 pm"

I rephoned BT and they said "no everythings fine and we have done a line test"

Whats going on? Any ideas?

The power light is on the modem but the ADSL light is not, I have swapped the filter with the one in the other room and still no joy.

Help me please ! :(

From memory, you may need 0,38 as the phone number but can't check at the mo.

This may be a bit catch 22, have you got the latest drivers for the modem?

see that's the crap thing about BB modems... you used to be able to user Dialer to see if you could get a tone... life was so much simpler when you had little bleeps and you could make your mobile ring as a test :)

I had the same problem awhile back and was told after 2or3 days of phoning everybody to turn my modem off for 12hrs as it is something to do with your servise provider a cockup in the system it worked good luck.

If the ADSL light isn't lit on the modem, then you have no ADSL signal being piped down the line OR you've not got your filters plugged in right.

Check the filters first (refer to the manual) and then phone BT (NOT your ISP) and check if Broadband is enabled on your phone line.

Thanks for the replies guys, the ADSL light has just come on this minute. I was on the phone to Tiscali at the time and the chap asked me to hold for 2 minutes while he did another line test. Within 30 seconds the adsl light came on and everything seems fine.

All a bit of a palaver with 6 calls to Tiscali and a few to BT. Tiscali kept telling me the fault was because BT were doing maintenance and the work would be finished at such and such time. When it still wouldnt work at the time they had given me I would start ringing Tiscali and BT all over again. Every time I spoke to BT they denied any work was being done and they had tested the line as ok.

Seems strange to me, a bit odd that within seconds of making my last stroppy phone call to Tiscali the adsl light came on and all was ok again. Tiscali passing the blame to BT?

Thanks again

Martin

Our friends had a similar problem when they moved house. They called their ISP to let them know they were moving and they said it would be fine. They moved in and connected up the PC and it worked fine.

A few days later and the connection died and they couldn't get it working. They phoned the ISP, who checked everything and they said it should be working. A couple of tries and calls and the ISP eventually sent out a new modem. They tried this but still no luck!

We went round for dinner one evening and I had a quick look - there was no ADSL carrier signal even though the ISP said it was working fine. I got them to call BT and they ran a test, then confirmed that the ADSL had been switched off. Another call back to the ISP to let them know what BT had said, and they called BT and got it reactivated. (deep breath)

I think it was down to the fact that the previous owners had broadband installed. When they moved out they either cancelled it or moved their service to the new place. The instructions from the two different ISPs must have crossed, and BT ended up pulling the plug on the ADSL on instruction from the former owner!

Luckily he was back online in a couple of days, but again it was the reluctance of the ISP to fully check with BT that held everything up!

Had a similar game with Tiscali and BT when I moved to my current house. The previous owners had left a broadband connection behind which prevented me from having my Tiscali connection. The conversations went like this:
BT said that Tiscali would need to raise an order to have the marker replaced (or I could have BT Broadband instead), Tiscali said that it was BT's responsibility to remove the old marker.

BT said ... (repeat for three weeks, threaten both companies with the Ombudsman and hey presto, it's done).
