Discussion - How about an Autobarn section in the UK

Stuck in a traffic jam today and the thought occurred to me of making a long section of Motorway in the UK - UNLIMITED SPEED :o

Lets not get bogged down with logistics and suppose that a 30+ mile stretch of motorway existed with minimal entrances, 3/4 lanes and a good surface (asking wayyy to much already, I know).

I just wonder how UK drivers / Riders would actually use it?

Would there be more / less accidents than average?

Would speed related incidents be less in the surrounding area as users would have UK Autobarn available.

Too much caffine again I guess?

I thought we already had what you describe .... M6 toll road

Say for example a 'back bone' to the motorway country one 600 mile long motorway goes to as many cities and the minimun distance between juntions be 15 miles?

I think the average british driver, me included, has to learn to use the ordinary m/ways properly first!

Interesting one,

Sections of road in the IOM are "unlimited"

The German autobahns are "unlimited" in some section but you can still be done for speeding if the polizei consider you are driving dangerously.

As for no speed limit on a UK mainland road. It would require an act of Parliament to get it done, not easy but not impossible.

There is a closed roads event on the UK mainlaind, the Jim Clark car rally, the roads are closed AND in effect no speed limit. Apparently the easy bit is to get the road closed the difficult bit, requiring legislation of some sort is getting the speed limit lifted.

The majority of the public have been brainwashed with the speed = accidents mantra of recent years so anything that appears to challenge this particular mantra is gonna have problem with public opinion, and cause a big battle not only with the speed = accidents brigade but with

The Nimbys, yes great idea as long as its not in my back yard,
The tree huggers, you're going to use HOW MUCH fuel?
The fun police, I don't mean the boys and gals in blue just the "hmmm that looks like fun so it must be stopped club"

Maybe easier just to pay up to do the cannonball run and take lots of cash for the fines!

Ray.

I am quite happy with my bikebarn, thanks.

Never mind a speed limit free road, one where I could do a consistant 70 would be a start.

Uk drivers are the worst in europe. No chance ever of any loosening of the noose that we adhere to. If anything it will go the other way in the future; Motorway bus lanes (ala M4). Lower speed limits because the band wagon politicians will be fattening up on the back of a fuel shortage.
Also it would not give anyone an excuse to go to germany .

hmmm Autoban on british roads sounds like a good idea But

how many time during your avarage day do you get to 70mph ???

Also if there was no speed limit the goverment would put in place variable speed limits and cameras so they would be racking it in !

EU want us to have singles with no more than 50 bhp so if the story in the MCN is true then I will sell the bike and by a big 4x4 !

It will obviously never happen in the UK but part of my (twisted) thinking was actually around REDUCING accidents....

Instead of Jonny Gixer 1000 doing a totally unsafe 120 down a country lane - he might just go and push it flat out down our (potentially 'safer' ???) Autobahn - scare himself silly and ride a bit more safely elsewhere?

High speed commuting as well though? How about making it bikes ONLY
