750ss v 900ss Carb versions
 
I've already received some great advice concerning the 750ss as I was bidding on one on ebay a while ago. Unfortunately I lost out in the bidding war. I am now looking at two more bikes - a 750 and a 900. I need a push in one direction or the other though. I know that the 750 is meant to be reliable and smooth and apparently the wet clutch is better than the 900ss dry clutch but is there a final word on the two or is it a case of preference. Is there a BIG difference in power?

Andy last advice much appreciated before I take the plunge

Let's try that again.

900 - but then I'm biased...

I find the clutch on the 900 to be at least as good as the 600SS (wet clutch) I had so that shouldn't split them.

From memory, the 750 did not have adjustable forks (but don't quote me on that) if that matters to you.

Can't really comment on power as I haven't tried a 750SS. Even the 600SS had enough power for the road (as many DD riders can attest to) but more is usually better :devil:

Well, where to start ...
I run a 900 carb engine in an 851SP chassis, a 750SS carb (wife's), a 620i monster, a 583SS DD and a 620i DD.
They are all different :D
The 900 engine has lovely grunt, but is rough below 3k (like all carb engines I have experience of) and runs out of puff above 8k (like all carb engines I have experience of) , and has a fairly fierce clutch.
The 750 is not bad for grunt - whereas the 583 is (obviously) lacking a bit down low.
The 620i pulls strongly and smoothly from about 2k up to about 10k :o
The 750 and 583 clutches are really much smoother and gentler than the 900. The 620 has the best clutch (its the newest design after all)
The 851SP handling is sublime.
The race monster handling is pretty good but nervous.
The race SS handling is pretty good overall.
The road SS is slower handling than I like.
The road monster is just too nervous and twitchy.

Personally, I'd like to try the SSi for handling, cos I think a zippier 750 engine (or 800 !) sounds a really good compromise.

Are you set on a 750? as I've got one here that I just cant seem to get the time to ride,its not perfect but if your interested I'll pass on the details.

Sorry, but I'm coming up to Dumfries on hols next week, and you made me remember my hols there last september, when we collected a 600 engine from Ayr and stored it under the table in the camper for a week, and then picked up a monster from Wales on the way home :lol:

Well, if you sell franco a trailer as well, I guess I could bring it back dahn sarf :eek:

Maybe its because I put STM and Cornerspeed after-market slave cylinders on the 900s? I would say that it's now the lightest clutch action of any bike I have owned - could cut through central London traffic all day long (if not for the abysmal steering lock!)

Did you type as normal.

750 v 900 .... I think you really need to try and ride both before deciding Franco - could be hard to do but if you have the money 'up front' should not be insurmountable.

Don't know Frank - I typed as normal and it came out with random stars. I copied my own text and retyped straight away as the text was still fresh in my head.

I think I saw another post where this happened (one of the replies to Jool's joke)

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply.
To be honest I'm considering both - I'm a DD'er and want a road bike that isn't going to cost me too much money to buy etc and is fun to ride and nice to own. So to answer your question yes it would be nice if you could send me the details including price on the U2U.
