What lines are you using with your oil cooler? Hi there, I'm seriously thinking about getting an oil cooler for my DD bike. I won't be able to win a race without one. No the thing is, my oil pressure warning light keeps flashing at the end of the races, and I don't really like that. Changing the engine is not in my budget :) So I'm thinking about fitting an oil cooler to the bike. If finding the cooler doesn't worry me too much (I'm sure any oil cooler would do the job) it's quite another story for the oil lines. I need them to fit the bike, and the oil cooler. It will work better. So what kind of hoses will be suitable? My DD bike is fitted with the carb heating kit (as all Monster post 98 or 99 are...), can I just open the oil circuit at that place? I've got unused braided brakes liens, do you think they could do the job? I think that's what is used for the carb heating kit... Thanks in advance for your help. Tonio. |
Antione, pop over & have a look at mine if you like on bike 39. I didnt use the 'correct' lines for mine. I used spare ones from my old race car which were russell lines. They ought to be bigger than the carb heater ones so they will bolt to a cooler. The line size is usually dash 8 i think. ask spareshack about lines and the oilcooler kit as stu keeps them in stock or can get them for you. |
I just thought, maybe my idea of plugging an oil cooler on the same circuit used by the carb heating kit is rubbish. I mean it's logical the lines used to warm the carbs up don't need to have a big diameter (so are the same than brake lines...) as a few hot oil will be enough to make the carbs hotter. As when cooling the engine oil, I mwant a lot of oil (so bigger hose diameter I guess...) to be cooled... I'll try and find some time to pop over mate, will let you know before ;) |
U2U Tonio |
Tonio we talked about this at CC if you remeber & IMO the lines you have going to the carbs are too small, one of my sponsors suplies these pipes & oil coolers I can ask him if he can do some lines for you that will also connect your carb heaters he is on holliday at the moment so bear with me. Chass. |
 chass i also discussed this with froggy chap at assen antoine just stop buying pretty bits and buy the oil cooler now:p |
Do what I do, don't have any warning lights ;) |
Actually, the oil pressure switches are a known problem. When they start to go they flash intermittently. Antoine - You can borrow the one off my spare engine to test that out if you like - I used it on the road monster when I bought that cos it had the same problem, so I know the switch is ok. |
That doesnt mean an oil cooler isnt a good idea, just that you will probably still have the problem after you fit it :) |
Cheers people, it's good to see so many people trying to bring solutions... :) Paul: haven't read your U2U yet, will do as soon as I finish that message  Chass: Could you ask your sponsor for a price all included? (cooler + lines) knowing I will get rid of the heating kit... Alan: guess what, I'm not even sure I will fit the shiny belt covers, now I'm worried gravels or stuff like this could go into the belts... Soon for sale I guess... Lucie: ... ... ... ... no way :) Phil: now that's an idea. I will try using the switch from my road bike. But then I really don't think it's a switch problem, as it always gets on at the same moment, when the engine is very hot (after a race) and I'm slowly going back to the pits (so the engine is not really revving). |
