Gearing

Toying with the idea of changing the gearing on he 999, I've dropped one at the front but still running the standard sprocket on the rear.

I want to go back to standard on the front and go up on the back to either give a similar ratio (3 teeth) or possibly 4-5 teeth on the back.

My question is what do people run and how many links do I need in my chain to achieve the desired gearing

Do you read owt i add to upnorth ? :D :D

try this http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/gearing.php 15/38 on 96 link chain.

Anyway, you need more top speed if you wanna keep with Hebbo or are you practicing the wheelies off crests with him next :)

I'd suggest putting 14 on the front and 45 on the rear, should make life interesting:lol:

John, isn't Shaun supposed to be a friend of yours?

You could do worse than take Shazaam's recommendation. I went with the 15/42 (his table says 43) on the 996 and it made a huge difference to the low gears. Sorted out all the pulling away problems, just left the top end a bit short but that shouldn't matter if you're just riding it on track, should it?

I'd use friend in the loosest of terms Ruth ;)

Gizmo - I don't need taller gears to stay with Hebbo, either just bigger spuds or close my eyes.

Shaun - Is that what you run???? ;)

Loz 16-Jun-2006 15:21

Hebbo runs 14 at the front and the standard rear on his 999R. Plus, I think, a nitrous kit ;)

He doesn't want to mess around with the chain or wheelbase, he says, hence the 14T.

Myself, I will be going down the 15/38 - 96 route as suggested by Gizmo (and others)!

As you saw mate i run now the std 15 front and 40 rear. I was on 15/38 rear, but struggled to pull top gear even on hanger straight!

I have to say first impressions of this combination at Oulton were quite impressive. its not too fierce even over the rise and down to hizzys!

I have 2 extra links in my chain this works with both the 38 and 40 rear and puts the rear wheel in the centre of the adjustments on the 40 and 10mm longer on the 38.

go for it!

Have a look at the Gearing Commander http://www.xs4all.nl/~ator0437/gc/
It will tell you.
