Fuel warning light embarassment!!
 

Lurvly run at the weekend 'cruising' past the tin boxes, down to the roundabout, knee out, pad down, oooh must look like Loris, splutter, splutter, conk....out of fuel. No warning!

Mighty red face as they all pass me pushing me wheels up the hill to the nearest petrol station!

Warning lights packed in - anyone any thoughts on the cause - relay maybe or fuse? From my very limited understanding of electrical diagrams doesn't seem to be on a separate fuse line?

Help appreciated.

You have checked the bulb? I assume so but you do not mention it.

Then if you find the connector at the tank you should be able to bridge out the appropriate pins to 'make the circuit' and test the sender unit?

A quick look on the 'Haynes' looks like light blue and dark blue with black marking wires, light blue being a fused feed and dark blue then off to fuel warning bulb, but just to confuse matters this changes to brown and white in harness before bulb.

The fuel light is fused along with the neutral light and oil pressure light so if those are working the fuse is ok.

So I reckon short out light blue and dark blue at plug and see if light comes on if so then sender at fault, if not trace the wire to where blue becomes brown/white and look for bad joint.

I had the same embarassment on way back to work from lunch once.

Ended up being the sender unit in the tank .

The worst thing about that is that im a mechanic and I had to call for road sevice to get some fuel .

lol

When you fill up with petrol, reset your trip to 0000. When it gets to around 100, look for a station. Never need to rely on the fuel warning "test" light bulb!!

In the good old days there was always the reserve tap................

If anyone finds the post with the answer to how long you can go once the light comes on can they post the answer.
