Oil

I need to top up my oil in my 1998 748 and its the first time I have done it, so, what type of oil should I use and are there any tips I need or is it so easy even I can do it.

Shell Advance 15w/50 is the recommended grade.

Quite difficult to get unless you have a Shell garage nearby that actually stock it, and it's damn expensive too!

Do a search on the board for "oil level" or have a look at this thread:

Bruce,

For topping up purposes you can be fairly relaxed about the choice of oil, as long as you aren't putting more that 0.5-1 litre in.

Any decent full synthetic oil will do the job. Ducati specifies a 15w/50 viscosity but you can use 10w/40 too.

Try and buy it from a dealer or even better, a major store chain like Asda, B&Q etc. Petrol forecourts charge top whack for all their products so you'll pay over the top for Shell Advance there even tho it's the most obvious place to start looking.

I use a small funnel and a piece of garden hose to help get into the filler hole ......leftovers from my collonic irrigation

Be careful not to overfill the sump. Add a bit at a time and let it settle before adding any more. Top it up until the level is just below the higher of the two marks adjacent to the sightglass on the RHS of your crankcase.

Any probs, just shout.

Have fun. Guy

I've been using Silkolene Comp 4 in my twins for the last 5 years both on the road and track and am well pleased with it.
