The price of seduction is £230, according to a new survey.

Some 1,000 British men aged 18 to 25 from eight UK regions were asked how much they spent on their girlfriends past and present - and how long they had to wait before they would go to bed with them.

The average courtship was 6.68 dates over 5.59 weeks before their girlfriends agreed to have sex with them, the research conducted by LP Lifestyle Card found.

Nearly nine times out of 10, the women would expect the men to pick up the majority of the bill for the dates.

By the time the girlfriends had agreed to have sex, the men would have spent an average of £230 on going out, at £34.58 a date.

There were big regional fluctuations, with the North East women needing the fewest number of dates at 5.6 over 4.2 weeks, and Scots women being the cheapest dates at £21.85 a night - but the Scots made their men to wait the longest with 8.6 dates over 7.2 weeks.

Men in the West Country paid the least total amount to seduce their women at £164.60, and Midlands men clearly hoped a few drinks might persuade their dates to jump into bed, spending the majority of their money on booze during their nights out.

West Country men spent the least amount of money in the UK on courting. The average price of a date was the cheapest in England but this could be down to lower drinks and food prices. They were also the least generous when it came to presents.

London males faced a combination of women who play fairly hard to get and astronomical prices. They also have the least frequent dates with only 1.02 per week, which was down to work pressures and transport problems.

London and South East - 6.4 dates over 6.3 weeks = £316.40
North West - 7.4 dates over 5.7 weeks = £284.80
Midlands - 6.7 dates over 5.8 weeks = £261.60
North East - 5.6 dates over 4.2 weeks = £208.10
Wales - 7.1 dates over 5.5 weeks = £203.70
East Anglia - 5.6 dates over 4.9 weeks = £193.60
West Country - 6.0 dates over 5.1 weeks = £164.60
Scotland - 8.6 dates over 7.2 weeks = £187.90
