Mallory track day - whats a good Novice lap time ? Hi, Did my 2nd track day ever, the first on my 749r and the first at Mallory. I have done a Drayton Croft 1/2 day race school there around 4 years ago on restricted GSX600 ... but that's as much experience of Mallory as I have. I was wondering what would be considered a reasonable lap time for a novice track day rider ? The circuit used the old "full" Gerrards corner without the mid corner chicane. |
Good club racers are 55sec-57.... Half decent club racers, 57-1.02..... Good trackdayers... 1.02-1.07.... anything up to 1.10 wouldn't be terrible :) |
Steves summary is spot on. After many many attempts I can do high 1.02's on my 748. Never timed my S4R.. Nat |
Some of the trackday companies still use the old circuit without the Gerrards Chicane. My son did his first ever trackday there recently on his 583 Monster and was in the novice group putting in 1.15. I thought that was very respectable for his first go. :D |
MMmmm OK, don't feel too bad now. The cicuit was the old circuit without Gerrards chicane. First session out was 1min 17 to 18  Last session was 1 min 10sec :) I know where my problem was, too slow going in Gerrards and Edwina's. OK (ish) coming out of both corners, but, slowed too much going in. Guys that were passing me easily in the first few sessions either struggled or could not get past me in the last few sessions. Saying that, I was in the inter / novice group. There were some very very fast guys in the fast group. |
Very good mate.. If you go again speak to some experienced Mallory riders - there are some good ways of lopping a couple of seconds off your times at various points - a good example being exiting the esses going into shaws. Nat |

Spoke to a couple of guys on the day. They said aim for the tree near shaws as you come out of the esses, keep it pinned and don't hit the brales until your under the tree ... seemed scary, but, did work. |
