748 service tips
 

I have just started to do a 12,000 mile service (working through the Haynes manual) on my 1998 748 Bip. Is there any other things worthwhile doing at the same time or things I should be aware of that tend to either get stuck or break or any tell tale signs to keep a look out for. Just dropped the oil, no **** on the sump bolt and the pick up fillter was nice and clean as well. Thinking I may remove the flywheel while I'm at it and put the head angle into the race position.

Make sure you have a new o'ring for the fuel pump body.
Check the rockers.

Strip and clean the calipers?

(If you use it in winter) Clean the mud out of the radiator so that it cools as efficiently as possible. Guy who services my used-every-day bike takes the damn thing off and soaks it in the solvent sink overnight... :rolleyes:

check the cam belt tensioner bearings

- can you explain what this involves and what the benefits are?

Removing the flywheel completely is an option on the early bikes on later ones you need to fit a lightened one. This allows the engine to rev quicker because of the reduced weight which allows you to get the power down sooner out of corners. There are down sides to this as the bike can be a bit on off at slow speeds through town etc. Some people swear by it others say its no good. So I guess I will just have to give it a go and see. The steering head angle can be adjusted on some bikes by 1 degree this is the 'Race' position. It will allow the bike to turn into corners quicker. Again mixed views on this some say track only some say not at all and some say only with the longer swing arm. So again you just have to try it and see if it suites your riding.
