New chain required

Just had my bike motd (passed) the tester said the chain was getting old and I should look at replacing it within the next 1000 miles or so.

What chain makes would you recomend, also is it worth getting a heavier chain, I understand that you can get sprocket kits to take a heavier chain

Tsubaki. If your chain is currently a 520 I wouldn't bother going to 525.

Red-Duc 02-Aug-2006 22:15

Im assuming ive got the original size chain would that be a 520?

Tsubaki, I use nothing else.

Havent had to replace one yet and they look very solid which is re-assuring.

How can I tell what size chain is already on my bike??

Herb 03-Aug-2006 20:47

When I replaced mine the size was embossed on alternate links, so you will have to get down on your knees.

I replaced it with a Tsubaki picked up from Cornerspeed. Count the links on the chain you take off, do not rely on the catalogue being correct.

A 520 is 1/4" across the plates, a 525 is 5/16" across the plates.

Chains are still made in imperial sizes, 5/8" by 1/4" = (5)x1/8" by (2.0)x1/8" hence 520.
5/8" by 5/16" = (5)x1/8" by (2.5)x1/8" = 525
and so on for other sizes.
