Single Cylinder 999??
 

My 999 has suddenly developed a problem in that it is only firing on one cylinder - bike was running fine on its last outing at Silverstone. Have yet to check electrics - has anyone got any ideas - is this a common problem?? Hoping to save a trip to the dealer!!!

Probably down to a faulty/ dirty/ wet coil. Identify which cylinder isn't firing, remove coil, clean it up & clear any moisture near the plug. Refit coil & test. If you're still having problems, remove & clean plug too.

It is quite common. Do a search on 'coil' in the 749/999 board.

Thanks ......... thought it might be something like this ....... am I right in thinking the coil is part of the spark plug cap? Guess it will involve removing fuel tank - any tips?

Coil is built into the plug cap, yes. If it's the rear cylinder that's playing up, you can just unbolt the seat unit & lever the tank/seat/tail section up to give you access to the top of the rear cylinder.

More likely to be the front coil.(Gets all the wet and muck off the front wheel.)
It is possible to get at it without removing the fairing,....unless you have one of the Casoli extended V pieces.

I'd try swopping the spark-plugs around first. and see if the same cylinder exhaust stays cold, then i'd suspect the ignition system. Common for a plug to give up.
